“Watch and pray with me that you enter not into temptation.” Our Lord spoke these words to his three beloved disciples shortly after having established the Mass and ordaining them priests. Such a great joy followed by this great sorrow was a shock for them. How was this possible? How can the savior be brought so low and be overwhelmed and crushed by sadness now? While Jesus is alone, they fall asleep... as perhaps do we.

Yes, the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. We experience this weariness when trying to keep our resolutions, trying to do good and avoid evil. Lent is a time of warfare, and we often fall wounded. How do we overcome and persevere? By careful vigilance over ourselves while craftily attacked by our enemy, and by fortifying ourselves by prayer. Alone we can do nothing, but Jesus has overcome all things - stay with Him.

Let us enter into this battle with the courage founded on the Almighty, and keep Our Lord company in the garden. Doing this we will be prepared for this great drama of Holy Week, penetrating its mystery and drinking from its wellspring.

In Christ,
Fr. Christopher Pedersen, Principal
