Our Staff Bios

The faculty for Our Lady of Sorrows Academy for the 2019-2020 Academic Year consists in:

                                  

 

 

Mrs. Jeanene Wantland
Kindergarten

Mrs. Wantland graduated with a B.S. in Family and Child Studies from Arizona State University, specializing in Early Childhood Development. She also received an AMI Montessori Diploma from the Southwest Institute of Montessori Studies in 2014. Mrs. Wantland has several years teaching experience at Our Lady of Sorrows Academy, Archway Classical Academy and, most recently, Palm Valley Montessori School.

 

Mrs. Katherine Young
First and Second Grades

Mrs. Young attended St. Elizabeth’s Nursing School in Utica, NY. She passed the NY Board of Exams for Registered Nurse in 1992. Mrs. Young has taught several years at St. Therese Academy in Nicholville, NY, St. Dominic School in Post Falls, ID and, most recently, substituting at Our Lady of Sorrows Academy.

 

Miss Margaret Schermann
Third and Fourth Grades

Margaret Schermann is a native of Arizona and a graduate of Our Lady of Sorrows Academy. She attended St. Mary’s College where she received an Associate of Arts Degree in 2013, and completed an additional year of the Humanities Extension Program. Margaret has spent time in Germany volunteering at a Society boarding school, and has worked in the ophthalmology field as an assistant technician before pursuing her career in teaching.

 

Miss Bernadette Williams
Fifth and Sixth Grades

Miss Bernadette Williams was born in Idaho but her family moved to Kansas while still she was still young. There she attended Saint Mary’s Academy for twelve consecutive years, earning first place as a senior in the SSPX national religion exam.  She then continued her education at Saint Mary’s College, and was awarded her Associates in Liberal Arts degree in May of 2019.  During this time she also gained experience by tutoring fifth grade math and sixth grade grammar.  She has had the chance to expand and complement her education by traveling throughout the United States, Canada and Europe.  She loves teaching and looks forward to this opportunity to teach fifth and sixth grade at Our Lady of Sorrows, under the mentorship of experienced teachers.

 

Miss Brigid Evans
Teacher’s Aide for the Lower Academy,
Physical Education (Girls)

Miss Brigid Evans is a native of Phoenix from a family of eight.  Following her graduation from Our Lady of Sorrows Academy she studied for two years at St. Mary’s College in Kansas.  Thereafter she returned to teach at Our Lady of Sorrows and then spent time abroad nannying for a family.  Upon her return, she again taught for the academy, and will this year assist Mrs. Young in the first and second grade, and teach Physical Education to the upper academy girls.

 

Miss Elizabeth Mioni
Teacher’s Aide for the Lower Academy

Miss Elizabeth Mioni also hails from the sunflower state, where she was born and raised in a family of eight children.  She graduated with honors from St. Mary’s Academy, and then was awarded her Associates in Liberal Arts from the college in 2019.  During this time she also worked at the academy doing tutoring.  She will be the teacher’s assistant for the third and fourth grade, and looks forward eagerly to assisting at Our Lady of Sorrows Academy.

 

Miss Rebecca Pedersen
Teacher’s Aide for the Lower Academy

Miss Rebecca Pedersen was born in Bakersfield, California, the eighth of thirteen children, but her family moved shortly thereafter to Kansas. She was schooled at St. Mary’s academy, being particularly involved in music, and graduated in 2016, and continued her studies at Highland community college.   In addition, she took courses to earn her certification as a veterinary assistant.  During the last two years she worked for Roll Products, a custom label company.  She will be the teacher’s assistant to Miss Williams for the fifth and sixth grades.

 

Mr. Gregory Williams
Junior High Science; Language Arts and History

Mr. Williams graduated with a B.A. in Liberal Arts from Thomas Aquinas College and received his M.A. in Liberal Arts from St. John’s College in 2006. He has over 15 years teaching experience. Mr. Williams has taught the Liberal Arts at Mariamante Academy in Greenfield, MA, Kolbe Academy/Trinity Preparatory in Napa, CA and Assumption Academy in Walton, KY, among other academies. Mr. Williams will be moving to Phoenix this summer.

 

Mr. Jeffrey Kalb
Junior High Math, Geometry and Physics

Mr. Kalb graduated with a B.S. in Materials Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY and received his M.S. in both Materials Science and Electrical Engineering from the same Institute. In addition, he completed coursework leading to a M.A. in Classics from the University of Arizona. Mr. Kalb has over 14 years teaching experience, and has been teaching for Our Lady of Sorrows Academy since 2006.

Miss Theresa Latz
Junior High Language Arts, Physical Science, History
and Language Arts

Miss Theresa Latz is a native Hoosier, having been raised in rural Indiana, the oldest of four children.  After high school she moved to Kansas, receiving her associates in liberal arts from St. Mary's College in 2014.  She then went on teach history and languages for four years at St. Mary's Academy, while also taking a mentorship role within the high school leadership program and assisting in a variety of administrative and operational positions.  She will teach literature, history, and science for the high school at Our Lady of Sorrows during the 2019-2020 academic year.
